If you are a student looking to gain work experience or are wanting to try a unique experience, have a look at the description below to know if it sounds interesting. The experience will be predominantly home-based/remote, although if you would like, you could participate on events and we can discuss compensation,

Family Wellbeing & Creative Practice Placement

Duration & Hours: To be agreed in accordance with Goldsmiths University placement requirements
Eligibility: Open primarily to Psychology students; students from other programmes with a strong interest in wellbeing, research, design, education, or community engagement are also welcome.

Placement Overview

This placement offers students the opportunity to engage in research-informed, practice-based learning focused on family emotional wellbeing, community engagement, and creative educational tools. The placement is structured to complement academic study by enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge, research skills, and critical reflection within a real-world context.

Students will work under the supervision and mentoring of the Director of The Wellbeing Designer Ltd and will contribute to projects involving family-centred wellbeing initiatives, educational events, and the development of a psychology-informed board game. The placement prioritises learning outcomes, reflective practice, and academic-professional integration.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the placement, students will have developed:

  • An understanding of how psychological theory and research can be applied to family wellbeing and community-based practice

  • Experience in engaging with families and learning how to contribute to the creation of emotionally safe, inclusive environments

  • Skills in empathetic communication, recognising and responding to families’ needs, challenges, and lived experiences

  • Awareness of how emotional wellbeing varies according to factors such as:

    • parenting styles

    • family structure and civil status

    • number of children

    • socio-economic and cultural contexts

  • Experience in conducting research to support practice, including:

    • reviewing psychological and interdisciplinary literature

    • translating research findings into accessible content

    • applying evidence-based insights to event design and game dynamics

  • Practical experience contributing to written and creative outputs (e.g. articles, social media content, educational materials), which students may reference publicly as part of their professional development

  • Insight into game mechanics and design, with a particular focus on how psychology influences engagement, curiosity, learning, and emotional connection

Research-Led Practice

All activities undertaken during the placement will be supported by research conducted by the student as part of their learning process. Students will be encouraged to:

  • Use academic and applied research to inform content creation and design decisions

  • Reflect on how theory translates into practice

  • Contribute research-based insights that shape:

    • educational materials

    • communication strategies

    • family events

    • board game dynamics and testing processes

This research component is intended to complement students’ academic studies and support their broader educational progression.

Indicative Duties & Activities

Depending on the student’s programme and learning objectives, activities may include:

  • Supporting social media and communication outputs, including content creation and storytelling grounded in psychological research

  • Participating in project brainstorming and development, contributing ideas that inform:

    • family wellbeing events

    • engagement strategies

    • educational and game-based tools

  • Assisting in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of family-focused educational and game-testing events

  • Supporting the coordination and communication with families participating in events or research-informed game testing

  • Drafting evidence-based content for social media, newsletters, or website platforms

  • Reflecting on learning through supervision, discussion, and, where required, written reflection in line with Goldsmiths’ placement requirements

Supervision & Support

Students will receive:

  • Regular supervision and mentoring

  • Guidance on ethical engagement with families and communities

  • Support in linking placement activities to academic learning outcomes

  • Opportunities for reflection and feedback

Suitability

While particularly relevant to Psychology students, this placement is also suitable for students from other disciplines who have an interest in emotional wellbeing, research-led practice, and community engagement.

In the case of participation to events, students will be compensated and will be provided with snacks.
